Public come to the aid of man stabbed in street

- CHRIS JONES

MEMBERS of the public rushed to the aid of a man who had been stabbed multiple times in a Loughborough street.

Emergency services closed off Victoria Street in Loughborough at 8pm on Thursday while the incident was dealt with.

Witnesses who went to help the victim, a man in his 30s, described him as having three wounds to his lower back, leg and stomach area.

Police, who were quickly at the scene alongside East Midlands

Ambulance Service, said the man was taken to hospital with injuries that are “non-life-threatening.”

A force spokeswoman said: “At 8.20pm on Thursday we received a report that a man had been stabbed in Victoria Street, Loughborough, close to the junction with Bedford Street.

“Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are in the early stages.”

One of the people who helped the man described the scene as they hurried to stem the bleeding.

The witness said when they arrived they could see what they thought were four people running away from the scene.

The witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said bystanders had heard the victim shouting for help and ran to the scene.

“You could tell it was serious,” said the witness.

“We could see the stab wound to the bottom but I couldn’t see much more as I was talking to the paramedics while my friend was trying to stop the bleeding.

“It’s scary, we’re all scared round here. This is not something you see day to day, apart from drug users.

“I keep my curtains shut most of the time, I don’t want to be seeing things like this.

“I’m shaken, upset and angry, because I know if we didn’t act quickly it could have been fatal.”

A 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old man have both been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent.

Both men have been released on police bail.
