Enjoyable talk for society...

-

AT ITS January meeting, the audience at the Loughborough Archaeological and Historical Society talk were treated to an exciting talk given by James Wright, who describes himself as a ‘buildings archaeologist’.

The fascinating topic of the talk was Medieval fireplaces and their placement in the manor houses of the time. James explained the meanings behind the physical placement of the fireplaces, on different floors of a house.

This was an indication – and in most cases, a downright open statement – about your place in society, which political party you were associated with and which religion you embraced.

The symbols and heraldic devices depicted on fireplaces were also explained.

As James had been involved in archaeological and other research at a variety of houses he was able to recommend quite a few places to visit, where one could still see remains of these fireplaces and now be able to better understand their meaning. Try Tattershall Castle, Baddesley Clinton, Kenilworth Castle, Kirby Muxloe Castle and Wells Cathedral.

The society’s next scheduled will take place on Thursday, February 6, 7.30pm at Charnwood Museum, when Peter Liddle will talk about

Lady Jane Grey’s House and the discoveries made at Bradgate Park during a series of archaeological digs over the past few summers.

This event is open to all: free to members, £5 for visitors.
