Wishing the National Health Service a happy 72nd birthday

-

LOUGHBOROUGH Constituency Labour Party wishes the National Health Service a very happy 72nd birthday.

We hung our bunting outside Unity House on Fennel Street on Saturday, July 4, and were joined by our borough councillors! The NHS is a strong pillar of British society which provides a vital service to ensure everyone across the UK has free access to healthcare at the point of need. It is now, more than ever, that we rely on our NHS and acknowledge its extraordinary abilities in the fight against Covid-19.

Since July 5, 1948, the NHS has been providing a life saving and world leading service which ensures everyone in the UK can live a fit and healthy life. Since its creation during the Attlee Labour government, infant mortality has dropped significantly and life expectancy has increased dramatically. These are just some of the long term achievements of the NHS and shows how successful it has been in improving public health.

The NHS employs staff from all around the world. It’s for this reason we not only celebrate the remarkable achievements of the NHS in improving public health, but we also celebrate its rich diversity and compassion seen in all our NHS professionals.

From our HCA’s, nurses, doctors, consultants, porters and countless other professionals, the NHS has become a family of devoted individuals who save lives because of their incredible work. Many of them have also given their lives during the current Covid-19 pandemic.

As we remember our past through these celebrations, it is important we consider the future of our NHS. Campaigns such as “Save Our NHS - Leicestershire” have shown there is more to be done to ensure the future of our NHS is not jeopradised. We need to stop the relentless privatisation of our NHS.

We’ve seen for ourselves how essential and life saving the NHS is. We must continue to fight for our NHS as it has fought for us against Covid-19. Now is the time we should reflect on the remarkable achievements of our NHS and fight for a strong future so the next generation have free access to this world beating service.
