Rothley Park charity day raises more than £8,000
IT HAS been an exciting spell for golfers at Rothley Park GC as they held a highly successful, well supported NHS Charity Day which raised £8,075.
This Charity Day event replaced what would usually have been the club’s two separate Captain’s Days, but was a joint funding activity instead.
More than 200 members turned out to play in the autumnal sunshine in the tournament at the club.
Club captain Alan Dorn and vicecaptain Simon Green were on the tee at 7am to see the first team start the competition.
Meanwhile, club presidents Gilly Clear and Robin Laurie, along with lady captain Jennty Piecha and vicecaptain Libby Carter, prepared the caddyshack with an array of refreshments.
Among them were Scotch pies, which proved especially popular – they were flown down from the famous Murdoch’s butchers in Invernessshire by Robin Laurie!
Many members entered into the spirit of the event by wearing “rainbow themed” golf attire.
This time Robert Jelley - the usual favourite for the best dressed award - was forced to give way to Jez Perry, Darren Want, Jonno Arkle and Asa English.
The Beat the Pro competition was another regular favourite, with all teams eager to challenge head pro Danny Spillane, Katie Tebbett and assistant Harry Schiltz, on the par three 12th hole.
All the greens were fast and, by the end of the day, the professionals just edged it.
The Full Square team of John Boggis, Mel Coupland, Ian Patchett and Craig Parkin won the day’s main event, on countback from Maz
Sharpe, Tom Rees, Tom Morgan and Alun Harry.
There were many other awards, including a golf weekend for four at the famous Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.
The day raised £8,075 for charity and will be split equally between the Leicester Neo-Natal unit and the Osborne Unit, at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Lady president Gilly Clear said: “A big thank you to all members, sponsors, helpers and staff who supported us either before or on the day. This is a significant sum for our chosen NHS organisations.”
