Light relief Festive cheer in town
THE Christmas lights in Loughborough have been switched on to bring some much-needed festive cheer to the town.
The usual Christmas lights switch-on event had to be cancelled because of the pandemic but Charnwood Borough Council was always going to light up the town.
Cllr Jenny Bokor, lead member for Loughborough, said: “This has been a very tough year for everyone but we were determined to switch the Christmas lights on for the people of Loughborough and beyond. I know we all need to be staying at home during the lockdown but we felt it was still important to switch on the lights at this time of year.
“Hopefully we will be able to get out a bit more soon and there are also people going to work and picking up items bought online or shopping for those essential items so I am sure they will enjoy seeing the town lit up.
“We have also captured plenty of pictures and video of the lights to see on our social media profiles so please have a look.
“I sincerely hope next year we can have our normal switching on of the Christmas lights and we can all be together again. The important point is that we all follow the guidelines to tackle this dreadful virus.”
The lights in Loughborough are organised by Charnwood Borough Council and Love Loughborough.
Lisa Brown, Love Loughborough BID Manager, said: “Love Loughborough has been committed to supporting local businesses throughout this pandemic and recognise the importance of brightening up Loughborough town centre this Christmas.
“We have installed icicle lights on over 100 shop fronts and lit up Church Gate Mews and High Street in order to complement Charnwood’s fantastic festive lighting scheme.
“From December 3, our town centre businesses will hopefully be able to re-open and trade throughout the Christmas season so I would urge everyone to shop local where possible and support them after what has been a difficult year for all of us. Shop Safe, Shop Local, Shop Loughborough.”
