Man pleads guilty to dangerous driving which killed student
A MAN has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving which caused the death of a university student.
Loughborough driver Manish Shah’s actions in Nottingham city centre in March last year claimed the life of 19-year-old William Christmas, a court heard.
Mr Christmas, from Dorset, died at the scene of the collision, in Derby Road, during the early hours of March 19.
He was a first year at the University of Nottingham, studying politics and international relations.
Shah, 38, of Barsby Drive, Loughborough, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and dangerous driving. He admitted both at Nottingham Crown Court.
An interim driving disqualification was imposed and he will be sentenced on Thursday, May 13.
In the days after the tragedy, Detective Constable Sarah Stables, of No t t i n g - hamshire Police, said: “This tragic incident cost a young student his life and the impact will be felt by his family he has left behind for the rest of their lives.”
A University of Nottingham spokeswoman said: “This is the tragic loss of a young life. “Our thoughts are with William’s friends and families and the university will be offering whatever support it can to them at this difficult time.” Mr Christmas’ friends p laced flowers and a Santa hat – a reference to his surname – alongside a tree at the scene. They also pinned notes to the tree, which became known as the Christmas Tree, calling the 19-yearold an “all round top bloke” and “one of the kindest and happiest people”.
