Greyhounds kill pet cat in horror attack

‘NO APOLOGY FROM DOGS’ OWNERS’ CLAIMS HEARTBROKEN FAMILY

- News Reporter By COREY BEDFORD

A HEARTBROKEN pet owner has described how the family’s cat was killed outside their Loughborough home by two greyhounds.

Carla Hunter, 35, found 10-yearold Gizmo in the mouth of one of the dogs, after hearing two young boys shouting “get off”.

By the time she got to the scene, Gizmo was bleeding badly and was dying.

Because the attack was animal-on-animal, Carla says there is nothing the police can do. But, she says, the dog owners, have yet to apologise.

“The very least they could do is help towards the funeral,” she said.

Gizmo was a part of our family for 10 years. We loved him very dearly, and they couldn’t even apologise to us.

A FAMILY has been left heartbroken after their cat was attacked and killed by two greyhounds outside its home in Loughborough.

Carla Hunter, 35, heard a group of young boys shouting “get off” outside her home on Thursday August 12 so she went outside to see what the commotion was.

Going past her garden fence, she found a group of kids with two greyhounds, and her cat, Gizmo, in the mouth of one of the dogs.

The other was trying to get at her second cat, Pebbles, who was sitting on top of her fence.

Carla said: “By the time I had got to him, he was dying.

“He had been bleeding very badly because of the attack, and was just lying there on the pavement after the dog had dropped him.

“There was nothing that could be done.

“The other cat, Pebbles, ran off afterwards, too, and I haven’t seen her since the attack.

“She must have been absolutely terrified from the ordeal.

“Gizmo was 10-years-old, and he was a gift for my daughter when she was four. It’s like she’s lost her best friend.

“She is absolutely heartbroken because of what’s happened.”

Carla contacted the police, but there is little they can do for animal-on-animal attacks, so she has since contacted the RSPCA and is currently waiting for them to get back to her.

She said: “It’s just so maddening. The dogs should have been on leads at the very least, if they are being walked in a public area.

“The owners haven’t apologised or anything for their dogs’ actions.

“The only thing they said was a joke about cats not having nine lives. It’s just unacceptable.

“I know they say dogs are part of the family, but so are cats.

“Gizmo was a part of our family for 10 years. We loved him very dearly, and they couldn’t even apologise to us.

“The very least they could do is help towards the funeral.

“It’s going to cost more than £130 just to get him cremated, and that’s without an urn or anything, just a bag of ashes.

“They told me that the dogs don’t have a bad bone in their body, but they clearly must do if they’ve just attacked my cat for no reason.

“They’re still animals at the end of the day, you don’t know what they are capable of.”

Carla is now sharing Gizmo’s story, and calling for dogs to be on leads and muzzled while out in public.

She said: “All dogs should be muzzled and on leads when in public. It’s that simple.

“Your dog can be the nicest dog in the world, but all it takes is for them to feel threatened and they can snap. “Some people might try to excuse it because it’s a cat, but there’s no saying next time it won’t be a child. “If you can’t control your dog when it’s off the lead, you need to take precautions to keep people safe.”
