Bags of rubbish picked up during NCS

-

A GROUP of youngsters have taken part in the National Citizen Service which included litter picking in Loughborough.

A spokesperson said: “During our NCS experience we decided to work with the community. This mainly consisted of litter picking and advertising ways for people to contribute to keeping our streets and environment cleaner and greener.

“We spent 30 hours helping the streets, and subsequently we filled 17 bags consisting of 70 litres each. In total we collected 1050 litres of rubbish, covering 50 km in 23 and a half hours of litter picking. At the end of this experience, we definitely felt like we had achieved greatly and had contributed immensely to our community.

“We were very grateful for the amount of recognition and sustenance from the community of Loughborough, there were many “thank yous” and positive passing remarks from most of the people. It made us feel empowered and supported.

“However, we were surprised by the amount of litter that is discarded on our streets each day, from this eye opening experience we want to raise awareness of the amount of litter that fills our streets without us even knowing.

“We unearthed the dilemma of our countries environmental problem. Not only in Loughborough, but across neighbouring villages, towns, cities and counties there is a staggering 2.25 million pieces of litter dropped each day. Furthermore, the UK generates a total of 222.3 million tonnes of waste with England responsible for 84% of the UK total. “Even through the expectation to clear all of this litter away is unfeasible and unrealistic, however, we can all do our bit to help find the missing piece to the jigsaw of the litter and waste crisis.”
