Carillon Ladies fightback earns draw in six goal thriller
LONG BUCKBY 1ST 3 CARILLON LADIES 1ST 3
SATURDAY’S match against unbeaten Long Buckby saw a gritty and determined performance by Carillon Ladies 1st XI.
Alice Bishop debuted for the team in goal in an evenly matched and hard fought first half. Although there were chances for Carillon in front, notably from Jo Hatley and Lizzie Simpson, it was the home team who scored first.
Carillon rallied and Nic Murdoch scored to pull Carillon level. Despite sterling defensive work from Georgia Relf, the home team struck again minutes later and the visitors went into the break 2-1 behind.
The second half however, was a different story, and Carillon did not allow the strong opposition to gain nearly as much ground.
There were a few tense moments – off the line saves from both Marion Godwin and Tamsin Perret at the defensive end and extremely close shots from both Jo Hatley and Claire Hawksworth in attack.
Although Long Buckby pulled ahead to a 3-1 lead early in the second half goals from Anna Godwin and Lizzie Simpson meant that Carillon Ladies came away with a wellearned draw.
There were also notable performances from Megan Braud in the middle and Abi Draper, who came on as second half goalkeeper.
Coach Ravi Matharu said afterwards that “a strong team ethic” and “superb performances all over the pitch” had meant that the team got the result they deserved.
