Instructor ‘felt sick after near miss with e-scooter pair’

- By ASHA PATEL News Reporter

A driving instructor wants to raise awareness of dangerous road users after capturing the moment an e-scooter rider was almost hit by his car.

The instructor of 12 years’ experience, who asked not to be named, was driving through Loughborough on Wednesday, when two people on one scooter pulled out of the side road without looking.

“I had slowed my speed down because it was dark and I had seen them coming but the light was green for me so it would have been red for them. But they ignored it and went straight through.”

He had to swerve out of the way, narrowly missing the pair who were illegally riding the electric scooter.

The instructor said: “As an instructor, a lot of things won’t scare me but I had to pull over afterwards because I felt like I was going to be sick. I wanted the two people to stop and say thank you at least but they had gone.”

Electric scooters are legal to buy, but use on public pavements or roads is illegal unless they belong to a company permitted to lease them out. There are no escooter schemes in Leicestershire.

He said if he had had a student driving at the time, the lesson would probably have had to stop and “turned into a counselling session”.

He hoped that by sharing the video people will think twice about riding scooters on the road and that it will raise awareness around road safety.
