A man is in a serious condition in hospital after a police pursuit on the A6 and A46 ended in a three-car pile-up.

The casualty is believed to be the driver of a BMW 5 Series car whose failure to comply with officers when asked to stop led to the chase on Tuesday October 26.

Police said officers from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) spotted a “car travelling at speed” on the A6 heading towards Loughborough.

A spokesman for the force said the chain of events began at about 10pm.

“The car – a BMW 5 Series – was requested to stop but the driver failed to do so,” he said.

“An authorised pursuit was initiated and then the car turned the wrong way on to the A46 at the A6 roundabout. “The BMW was found abandoned a short time later, having been involved in a collision with the central reservation and two other cars.

“The driver of one of the other cars had suffered minor injuries that are not life-threatening or life-changing, and the driver of the third vehicle was not injured.”

Help was requested at the scene from East Midlands Ambulance Service and National Highways officers.

The police spokesman said: “Following a search of the area – and with assistance from a police drone – a 26-year-old man was found injured.

“He was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police and taken to hospital for treatment.

“He remains in hospital in a serious condition at this time and inquiries into the incident are continuing.”

Traffic information service Inrix initially stated at 10.30pm that four vehicles had been involved in the collision.

The northbound carriageway was shut to all traffic between Beaumont Leys and Anstey and Birstall at 10.15pm.

The closure affected a stretch of road from the A5630 to the A6 Loughborough Road. National Highways East Midlands confirmed at 1.20am yesterday that the road had been cleared and that the A46 had reopened. Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw the BMW being driven prior to the incident, to get in touch.

Officers would also like to hear from motorists whose vehicles may have captured dashcam footage of the BMW or the subsequent crash.

Anyone with information is urged to call the 101 number.
