SARWAN WAS WORKING OUT WITH WIFE WHEN HE STOPPED BREATHING

THE son of a man who suffered a heart attack during a workout has praised gym employees for saving his dad’s life.

Sarwan Sethi, 77, who has been working out five times a week with his wife Urmala, 75, for the past 19 years, stopped breathing at the Loughborough branch of Pure Gym.

Staff leapt into action and gave him CPR and used a defibrillator, which restarted Sarwan’s heart and he started breathing again.

Sarwan’s son, Ajay, contacted our sister paper the Leicester Mercury about the incident because he wanted to publicly pass on his family’s thanks for saving his dad’s life.

He said: “Me and my mum are just eternally grateful. If they weren’t there, he wouldn’t be here.

“If it had happened anywhere else, I can’t imagine what could have happened.

“I just wanted to say a massive thanks to all the team.

“We feel so lucky they had a defibrillator and were trained.

“They went the extra mile. Through all this, they managed to get my dad breathing again and restarted his heart.

“The other members of staff comforted my mother, who was there with him, and called 999.

“The paramedics and the hospital doctors told us that had it not been for the actions of the staff in the gym my dad would not be here today.

“Within an hour of the heart attack, my dad was in theatre having two stents inserted.”

Following the incident, which happened on August 3, the family visited the facility to say thanks to staff Carl, Carla, Jude and Adam.

Ajay said: “My mother, father and I went to see the Pure Gym manager last Thursday to thank him for all that he and his team did that day.

“They kept following up with my mum and even cut all the locks after the incident so we could get the car and our bags.

“It’s not just what they did, it’s how they did it.”

Rebecca Passmore, UK managing director of Pure Gym, said: “Thankfully, it is a relatively rare occurrence that a member is taken seriously ill in our clubs, but we make sure our team members are fully trained to react, just in case. “We are incredibly proud of the team who supported Sarwan when he became unwell in our Loughborough club, particularly our assistant gym manager, Carl Edwards, who went above and beyond.

“We are so happy that Sarwan is recovering well and has stayed in touch with the team.”
