Travellers blocked road as they camped

-

A village was home to a group of travellers last week after they illegally parked their caravans in the middle of a road.

Five caravans arrived in Birstall and parked up towards the top of Thurcaston Road, blocking the middle of the street.

Their arrival prompted disgruntled locals to post about the traveller presence on Facebook.

The post, on the Spotted Birstall page, warned other residents about the illegal encampment.

The post also said: “The public footpath alongside the golf course is particularly hazardous due to human excrement.”

A spokesman for Leicester City Council said at the weekend the group is no longer in the area.

They said: “This group is no longer in Leicestershire having left on Wednesday.

“The five caravans arrived at the old Thurcaston Road on Friday, October 29.

“The multi-agency travellers’ unit (MATU) carried out social and welfare inquiries on Monday 1

November and served a direction to leave notice.

“On Wednesday the group complied with this notice and left later on that evening.

“Leicester City Council’s cleansing team then visited the location on Thursday, November 4 and provided a clean-up service.”
