Birstall are foursomes champs

-

BIRSTALL are this season’s interclub county pro/am foursomes champions.

Professional Michael Reed and amateur Ryan Topley won the title at Kirby Muxloe GC, beating Longcliffe GC professional David Mee and amateur Steve Critchley in the 18-hole final.

It was a mixed start with a swift exchange of holes over the opening nine.

Birstall won the first, the fourth and the sixth, but Longcliffe took the second, with a birdie, the fifth and the eighth, which they also birdied, so the pairs were level at the half-way stage.

Longcliffe went one up when they also birdied the 10th. But then it was all Birstall for the remainder of the round.

They won 11, with birdie, and 13, with birdie 3, and a par 4 at 14 saw them go two up. The next two holes were halved, but Birstall claimed the crown when they won 17 to win by a 3 and 1 margin.

Reed and Topley were presented with their award by county golf union director of tournaments Kevin Whitfield-Green, who congratulated them on their success throughout the championship and applauded all the competitors in this popular county event.
