A family has been left distraught after their dog, which ran away because she was spooked by the noise from fireworks, was found dead by the side of a road.

Rescue lurcher Prosecco became distressed and ran away from the farm where she lived, between Waltham on the Wolds and Eaton, on Saturday evening.

Her family appealed for help to find her on Facebook and drove around for hours in a bid to find her.

She was seen by several people, but was so timid around people that no one was able to get close enough to retrieve her.

Prosecco was found dead the following day, by the side of the A607, about half-a-mile from her home.

Boogie Machin, 33, and her family took on Prosecco when she was one year old and said they were determined to provide a loving home to the pet, who had a rough start to life.

She said: “She struggled with trust at first. She was very loyal – she was lovely to be around.

“She loved running around, fetching balls.

“She was a bit wary with strangers and getting to know them. It took six months to build up a relationship with her.”

They named her Prosecco, as they wanted to give her a name beginning with the letter P after one of Ms Machin’s best friends, Powys, died in a car crash.

Boogie said she believes fireworks should be banned from sale to the general public, and should only be used at certain events.

She shared a link to a survey about the use of fireworks, set up by MP Elliot Colburn, who led a debate in Parliament on Monday about how they should be regulated.
