Witness bid as raiders rip off front of cash machine

-

THIEVES have broken into a cash machine at a motorway service station near East Midlands Airport, police have revealed.

Officers with Leicestershire Police said the perpetrators targeted a cash machine at the Castle Donington Moto services on the A453, off junction 23a of the M1, in the early hours of Monday.

Detectives believe the raiders used a vehicle to rip the front of the cash machine off.

They were then able to get at cash boxes secured inside the ATM before making their getaway.

It has not been revealed how much was stolen in the raid.

A police spokesperson said: “It is believed a Ford Transit van was used to pull the front of the cash machine away from the wall. Access was gained to the cash boxes and the suspects made off in a separate vehicle.

“The incident took place at 12.48am and the van was left at the scene.”

The area outside the motorway services was later cordoned off while a full examination of the scene was carried out.

An appeal for witnesses or anyone who saw suspicious activity has been issued by detectives.

“Inquiries are ongoing in the area to identify any potential witnesses,” said a police spokesman.

“Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have been at these services during the early hours of Monday to get in touch.”

He added: “If anyone was parked in the area and has video recording equipment installed in their vehicles they are asked to check the footage and contact police if they captured anything that may assist.”

Anyone with any information is urged to call the police 101 number, quoting crime
