welcomed visiting judges, Gary and Carol Langley, both highly qualified in the world of photography, to its meeting held on Monday, November 22, when the annual Panel Competition between members was held. This competition was open to panels consisting of three or four images which, when combined, would form one image for projection with each entrant able to submit up to four panels.

Gary and Carol laid down their own brief when judging this competition which included taking note of the quality of photography, did the panel fit together well, its overall impact and if it was pleasing and well balanced to look at.

This criteria having been met, they proceeded to provide constructive comments for each panel before deciding which stood out as winning contenders.

Shown in either monochrome or colour, there was an interesting subject selection of mages but, with a strong natural history and wildlife representation within the Society, it seemed that those images made their presence felt.

Gianpiero Ferrari was awarded 1st and 2nd places for his stunning colour panels of ‘Orchids and Insects’ and ‘Birds in Winter’ respectively. He also achieved a highly commended with his entry ‘Swallow-tailed Moth’.

Richard Storier’s monochrome panel, ‘Magpie

Mine’, achieved a creditable 3rd place.

With a little time to spare before the close, Gary and Carol put their own necks on the line and presented a selection of their own prints to the audience

. Beautifully mounted, subject matters included land and seascapes, natural history and wildlife, sporting activity and the occasional portrait. These were passed around the room so all could clearly see their techniques used and were considered very impressive.

John Hoogerwerf, President, thanked Gary and Carol for excellent judging with their comments adding to the overall presentation of really good panels resulting in a very enjoyable evening.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, December 6, at St. Mary’s Church Centre,

Mountsorrel Lane, when one of Sileby’s members, Gianpiero Ferrari, FRPS, DPAGB, FBPE, AFIAP, will present digital images ‘Spring Among the Clouds – Part 2’.
