Collapsed crossbar ends game

-

ANY football season contains its fair share of the bizarre, but this will probably take some beating.

Friar Lane & Epworth welcomed Sileby Town to the Spice Bazaar for a game in the Everards Brewery Premier Division, the home side no doubt confident of repeating their 4-0 win at Sileby two weeks ago.

Instead, it was Sileby who took the lead, and 2-0 up with half an hour to go, and pressing for a third, they looked well-set for all three points, when down at the Sileby end, at the opposite end to play, the crossbar suddenly collapsed of its own volition, with no players near the goalposts at the time.

The match was immediately stopped, and after it became clear that repairs could not be carried out quickly, and with FLAE still unable to use their floodlights, referee Liam

Mayes was left with no option but to abandon the match.

The LSL Management Committee will make a decision in due course as to the game, once any County FA inquiry has been completed.

All other matches in the Premier managed to reach their conclusion, Rugby Borough maintained their 100% record with a 1-0 win over Northfield Emerald, . Thurnby Rangers travelled to Hathern, but required a slice of luck for their three points, with Shaun Barber catching the Hathern keeper off his line in the first half, before Chris Davis equalised for Hathern early in the second half. The game looked set for a draw, but Thurnby’s winner came through sub Dean Clark to give the visitors a 2-1 win. Glenfield United’s title hopes seem to be fading fast, as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat at ProChance.
