A sad state of affairs for cigar smokers

-

HAS the National Trust really stopped selling cigars at Sir Winston Churchill’s former home at Chartwell, near Westerham, on the grounds of low demand, as it claims, or is it due to political correctness?

When demand for a product falls, most retailers reduce their stock, but they don’t banish the item. If there is an increase in inquiries about the availability of cigars in the Chartwell shop, will sales resume?

The wartime Prime Minister was famously a cigar aficionado.

Anyone who has visited Chartwell will understand how the tranquillity of its setting captivated and inspired Churchill. Looking out over the Weald of Kent, he said: “I bought Chartwell for that view.”

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to gaze at the same majestic vista while puffing Churchill’s favourite Romeo y Julieta Cuban cigar.

As he reportedly said: “Smoking cigars is like falling in love. First, you are attracted by its shape; you stay for its flavour; and you must always remember never, never to let the flame go out!”

So, put the cigars back on sale, Chartwell, and a two-fingered Churchillian salute to political correctness!
