FOND FAREWELL. After five years at East Leake Academy, missing from the staff list for this new term is popular Sarah Roberts.

Mr Blake Francis, the Academy Principal says they have given a fond farewell to Sarah who was relocating.

Sarah has been at East Leake Academy for five years, starting as a trainee teacher before becoming a permanent member of the ADT department.

Mr Francis said Sarah had been a valuable member of the team as a teacher and tutor and she will be missed by her colleagues and students alike.

TREE BID. An application has been made to Rushcliffe Borough Council by the parish council at East Leake for six free trees from the Borough Community Tree Scheme. The parish have also agreed to the cutting back of branches of the trees in the Memorial Garden:

The council agreed that their tree warden Coun. Wendy Thompson apply for the six trees on behalf of the Parish Council, and they be used to replace the dead trees on Church Close, Holme Avenue and Castle Hill.

The clerk Sue Lewis has reported in respect of Memorial Garden Trees – the council had received a complaint had been received from VIA about the Nottingham City Busses hitting the tree branches. Council members were told the Tree Officer at Rushcliffe Mr Tom Pettitt was contacted and he had informed the parish that as it was a complaint from VIA, they did not need permission to get them cut back. The parish council have agreed that the trees be cut back.

FOOTBALL. After consulting with officers and junior team parents, Castle Donington Football Club cancelled its Christmas Party and the event will now be re-arranged for the February half-term or at Easter.

Officers said that they realised that the cancellation would be “disappointing” but in the light of the escalating Covid infection levels and “as a responsible club within the community hosting an event that may impact on families getting together over Christmas it did not feel it was appropriate.

In a statement the Club said: ” We are aware of a significant number of families that did not wish to attend which does not align with the all-inclusive principles of the club.”

When the re-arranged party takes place it will include the party games, raffle and prizes.

Castle Donington Junior Football Club was founded in 1977 and it was the first club to provide junior league football for the village. It began when villager George Smith noticed whilst at work that local Castle Donington boys were playing on the Slack and Parr football pitch for Kegworth Imps. He felt it was “a shame that local boys couldn’t play in and for their own village.”

He placed an advert in a local paper for volunteers to start a team. He found Keith Lycette, and then Alan Morgan, who is still a big part of the football club today. The first team to represent CDFC entered the Derby City League which then generated more interest and more teams of different age groups started to form.

The club was proud to receive FA Community status in 2004 by the Football Association. This is the pinnacle of levels that the club can reach. It is awarded to clubs that have a high quality, multi team (minimum of 10 teams) set up with excellent social, training and playing opportunities for all.

Castle Donington FC, after renaming following the successful development of the senior teams, also won the award for Top Charter Standard Club in 2006.

Another area where the club have developed is to deliver high quality coaching via the in house Academy for players in the U7-U10 age groups. All managers are encouraged to develop their coaching standards with all holding a minimum FA Level 1 coaching qualification.

In 2020 the club reached the 30 year Anniversary of twinning with our friends from US Gasny Football Club in France, an event that is celebrated in Castle Donington and Gasny with a friendly football tournament every year.
