Date night went from bad to even worse with car crash and drink-drive arrest

-

A WOMAN who left a pub to get away from a bad date saw her night go from bad to worse when she crashed her car – and was then arrested for drink-driving.

Jagruti Mokhra, 38, met the man at a pub but “wanted to get away from the situation” and drove off in her VW Golf, Leicester Magistrates’ Court heard.

But after less than two miles down the M1, she crashed into a road sign near to Leicester Forest East services.

The sign toppled over on to her car, leaving her trapped inside.

Mokhra, of Stackyard Close, Braunstone Town, admitted drinkdriving on August 7 last year.

Prosecutor Sajeela Hussain told the court: “A 999 call was made by a member of the public. They stated a female driver was in the car, which had come off the motorway at speed.

“The airbags had deployed and the defendant was trapped inside the vehicle, which was on the verge at the slipway leading to the Welcome Break services.

“The vehicle had collided with a large sign made of wood and metal that had collapsed on top of the car.”

Mokhra was released from her car and taken to hospital, where a sample found that her urine contained 136 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml. The legal limit is 107 microgrammes.

Jagvir Sangherra, representing Mokhra, told the court his client was a single mum and had gone on a date that had not gone well.

He said: “She concedes she consumed some alcohol. She felt unsteady on her feet. The male she was meeting with intimated that he would give her a lift, but she wanted to get away from the situation and drove a short distance and ended up having the collision.”

He said his client, who had previously worked in beauty therapy but was currently on benefits, had been in a neck brace after the crash and still had a “foggy mind” about what had happened.

The court fined Mokhra £120 with a £34 victim surcharge and £85 court costs. She was banned from driving for 12 months.
