Carillon stage fightback to win five-goal thriller

-

LOUGHBOROUGH CARILLON 1ST XI 3 NORTH NOTTS 3RD XI 2

CARILLON showed real fight as they came back from 2-0 down to record a 3-2 win against visiting North Notts on Saturday.

The squad was bolstered by a few returning faces, the most notable being Tom Wood, Carillon’s leading goal scorer, who was back following a wrist injury.

Though, as the game began, less thought was turned to Wood and more about Carillon’s defensive efforts. Notts have been experiencing some trouble fulfilling fixtures and had reorganised their teams as a result and they came with a strong side.

They put Carillon under pressure and scored two well worked goals to put themselves 2-0 up within the first 15 minutes. While this was a setback, Carillon have begun to show some resilience and came back into the game quickly. After several close efforts and some fine goalkeeping, Alex Carter broke through the visitors defence with some nice skill and put the goal on the plate for the diving Joel Sibson.

Carillon drew level with the goal of the game shortly after, a move involving a number of the younger players opening up the Notts defence with Charlie Woodfield, who had come all the way from defence, applying the one touch finish into the backboard.

With the scores level at half time, Carillon were odds on to go on and win the game, which they eventually did deep into the second half.

Following a charged down short corner, the returning Wood picked up the ball and lashed it into the net on the reverse leaving the defenders helpless. The home side saw out the remaining minutes to collect a well deserved three points.

With Carillon 2nd XI without a game, Carillon 3rd XI were the only side to make an away trip to Derwent 5th XI and returned victorious with a 3-1 win. The goals were scored by Mike Oswell, Anshul Dani and Joe Bird, although reports suggested the margin of victory should have been far clearer.
