Charnwood AC secure gold at Midlands Counties

CHARNWOOD AC athletes put in some great performanc­es at the weekend as the club clinched four golds, three silvers and a bronze at the Midlands Counties Cross-Country championsh­ips.

Held at a very windy Berry Hill Park in Mansfield, there were gold medals for Ethan O’Shea (U20 Men), the U20 Women’s team, Mark Couldwell claimed an individual gold medal in the Midlands Masters M45 age group and Steve Hillman a gold in the M65 age group.

The U13 girls got the day under way finishing as the sixth-placed team overall. They were led home by Florence Wheeler in 19th, with Lilia Wilkins in 45th, Hannah Murphy 48th, Freya Suart 53rd and Amelina Panni in 69th.

The U13 boys were up next and delivered the first team medal of the day with a bronze, led home by Josh Adkin in 8th with Olly Lockton 28th, Jacob Duncombe 30th, Ollie Stenhouse 34th, Max Muddle 36th and Alex Suart in 60th.

As the wind got stronger and stronger, the U15 boys had an incomplete team but put in some strong performanc­es with James Norman 52nd, Miles Foord 56th and Sam Tansey in 61st.

The U17 Women kept the medals flowing with a team silver, losing out to Wolverhamp­ton and Bilston by just one point with Amelie McCann 11th, Sophie Dunbobbin 13th, Isabel Oakland 15th and Gracie-Rose Walters 21st. The U17 Men again had an incomplete team but some more good runs from Luke Talbot in 17th and Sam Haines in 36th.

They were followed by the Senior Women winning a silver medal and starting a run of races with medals for Charnwood AC.

The Senior Women were led home by Sophie Coldwell 7th, with Juliet Potter 8th, Hannah Seager 17th, Ella Taylor 18th, Natalie Egginton 84th and Elaine Seager 123rd. Some of the masters age groups ran the same course as the Senior Women, with Steve Hillman claiming a gold in the Midlands Masters M65 age group.

The U20 Women then put in their gold medal-winning performanc­e with Lexie McLoughlin in 8th, Gemma Newport 9th and Alice Walton 14th.

This was followed by the U20 Men with Ethan O’Shea winning the race with a gold medal and leading the team to a silver medal with Finlay Cross 18th, Colin Foord 22nd, Alex Coleston-Shields 23rd, William Leggatt 28th and Joseph Leggatt 34th.

The Senior Men finished the day off. In the Seniors race Harry Lupton led Charnwood home in 11th with Mark Couldwell in 64th (winning his gold for the Midlands Masters M45 age group), Pat Faulkner 108th and Paul Harmer 142nd.
