FAMILY ANNOUNCE DEATH OF TEENAGER WHO SPENT LAST SIX YEARS BATTLING CANCER

- By TOM MACK News Reporter

A 17-YEAR-OLD boy who spent six years fighting a brain tumour has died.

The family of Matty Hatton announced on Sunday night that the Mountsorrel teenager “gained his angel wings” and died peacefully.

He had been diagnosed with the cancer in December 2016.

He went through months of difficult treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Then, 18 months later, he rang the bell on the cancer ward to celebrate the news the tumour was in remission. Sadly, the family had to announce in May 2020 that not only was the tumour back, but this time was untreatable.

At the time his mum, Alison, 48, said: “There is not a lot doctors can do now, and Matty knows that, too.”

He fought on for another 20 months.

In a Facebook post on the Matty’s Magical Memories page, his family said: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Matty gained his angel wings last night. He peacefully slipped away with us by his side.

“Obviously this leaves a gaping hole in our hearts, but we wish to celebrate having Matty in our lives for the short time that we did.

“We are now going to hibernate for some time to try to come to terms with our loss so please don’t be offended if we do not reply to any messages for the time being.”

The family went on to thank the Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough for everything it did to make Matty comfortable in his final days.

The family said: “We could not have wished for better care.”

They added: “We love our boy so much and he was the best son and brother anyone could ask for.”
