FOR the first time, people can get the Covid-19 vaccine in Leicestershire without having to get out of their car.

A drive-through vaccine centre was launched this week to make it more convenient for people to get the jab.

Situated outside County Hall in Glenfield, it is the first centre of its kind in the city and counties and the NHS hopes that its convenience will prove to be popular.

It will be available to people without booking and will have the capacity to vaccinate up to 720 people a day, from Wednesday to Sunday.

Dr Caroline Trevithick, deputy chief executive of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Groups, said: “Finding new and inventive ways of working has been key since the start of the pandemic.

“Creating a drive-through vaccine clinic is just one example of thinking outside the box, making it quick and easy for people to get the jab.

“You can simply turn up, or if you prefer you can book a timed slot in advance.

“It’s designed to fit around people’s busy lives.

“Families will be able to get the vaccine together, from the comfort of their car, and drive off with confidence that they are now protected against Covid.”

Everyone in the car, including the driver, can get the vaccine through the car windows.

If the driver gets the jab they will be asked to wait 15 minutes to ensure there are no side-effects.

Otherwise, they can drive away straight after the vaccination, which takes no more than five minutes per person. The clinic will be open from 11am to 7pm.

It is located in the car park to the rear of County Hall, off Leicester Road, Glenfield.

Vaccines will be available to people aged 12 years and over. This includes first, second, and booster doses.
