A SERIES of free open days is being held to give people a taste of the hundreds of adult learning courses available – and anyone interested in learning new skills or finding a new hobby is invited to go along to find out more.

The part-time day, evening and weekend courses are run by GoLearn, Leicestershire County Council’s adult learning service, in venues throughout the county.

Courses include digital skills, Italian, Spanish, British Sign Language, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), online safety, pottery, Indian cookery, astronomy and yoga.

There is also a number of free courses available for people seeking work and looking to gain basic skills, as well as flexible English and maths GCSE and functional skills courses.

Other free courses include ones to help support and maintain mental health, and an essential digital skills qualification.

The open days are being held this week to give would-be learners the opportunity to find out more about the hundreds of courses GoLearn has to offer; meet the tutors; explore the venues and take part in have-a-go activities.

Loughborough’s open day is at

Moira Adult Learning Centre, Moira Street, tomorrow (Thursday 17) from 1pm-3pm.

Activities will include drawing and painting and sewing tasters with the Learning for Wellbeing team; digital photography and Photoshop tasters from the digital skills team; a CV surgery with the work and skills team; displays from the Active Charnwood team, and volunteering opportunities and advice from the WILL Project.

Staff will be on hand from the apprenticeships, English and maths and Learning for Wellbeing teams.

Councillor Christine Radford,

cabinet member for heritage, leisure and arts, said: “There are hundreds of GoLearn courses available in a huge range of subjects – and they can be lifechanging.”

Anyone who enrols on a GoLearn course by February 28 will get a 20 per cent discount. Further fee reductions are also available to learners on benefits such as Universal Credit and JSA, and for those on a low household income.

All courses can be searched online, or call GoLearn on FREEphone 0800 988 0308.
