Quarterly competition
ROUND one of the annual Quarterly Competition took place at the meeting of Sileby Photographic Society held on Monday, February 28, when responsibility for judging the entries fell to Steve Walters, BPE2*.
As the title suggests, the competition takes place over four rounds throughout the calendar year, and covers all categories, namely, monochrome prints, colour prints and digital images. Subjects presented included portraits, architecture, land and seascapes, natural history and wildlife, re-enactment, and sport, with the subject matter being that of the entrant’s own choice.
After a full and interesting evening, and with presentation completed, Steve’s awarded marks for each entry enabled the winners in each section to be identified as follows, with first place being awarded the maximum of 20 points.
In the monochrome section, Alun Williams and Mandy Sherrington led the field, both scoring 20 points with their entries ‘Leopard at Night’ and ‘St. Jean de Gaztelugatxe’ respectively. Alun and John Hoogerwerf each scored 19 points with ‘It’s Hot Work at the Foundry’ and ‘An Elegant Bridge’ respectively.
Gianpiero Ferrari almost swept the board in the colour print section with two fine natural history and wildlife entries. ‘Swallow Tail Moth on Foxglove’ and ‘Lesser Redpoll Pair in Winter’ were each awarded the maximum 20 points, but Mandy Sherrington’s entry ‘ Tea Picker’ gave him a run for his money scoring a creditable 19 points.
On to the digital images, and it was Gianpiero and Alun who took the honours with their fine examples of ‘African Elephant at Sunrise’ and ‘Serengeti Hunter’ respectively, each being awarded the maximum 20 points. Three entries were awarded 19 points each. These were Pete Smith’s two images ‘Siskin in Spring’ and ‘Giant River Otter Eating Catch’, and Mandy’s entry ‘First Light, Lake Wanaka’.
Many fine prints and images had been entered for the competition, and thanks were given by John Hoogerwerf to Steve for his excellent judging which had offered constructive comments throughout, and also to those members who had taken part.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, March 14 at St. Mary’s Church Centre. This will be more of a social evening between members whereby hot and cold drinks and refreshments, plus ‘catch-up’ chat, will take place during the interval. Members are also asked to bring along a selection of their own prints and/or digital images which will be shown during the course of the evening.
