We’ll drink to that! Borough gin wins distillery an award

NEW ADDITION TO RANGE HAS FLAVOURS INSPIRED BY FOREST

- By STAFF REPORTER burleighsgin.com

A new gin with a distinct Leicestershire flavour has earned its distillery high praise and an award.

Burleighs’ National Forest Gin, produced in collaboration with expert foresters, has received a five-star rating in Difford’s Guide and secured 90 points, enough to earn it a silver award in the International Wines and Spirits Competition (IWSC) – the world’s largest and most influential international spirit awards.

Difford’s Guide provides drinkers with information and expertise on what to drink and how, while the competition is judged by experts from across the global spirits trade.

It involves a tightly structured and rigorous tasting process.

The “double blind” method sees samples tasted in prepoured numbered glasses to ensure the experts never see a bottle. The IWSC described the gin as “gorgeously rounded”, having “lovely clean flavours of bitter orange and coriander”, while Difford’s Guide outlined its “attractive earthiness, assertive spice and delicate floral and fruity notes”.

Inspired by the area that surrounds the distillery in Nanpantan and created to provide funds and support to the National Forest, a donation from every bottle goes to the forestry organisation to support its work in the Midlands.

The achievements build on Burleighs Gin’s success in the 2021 IWSC awards, where its Distiller’s Cut Gin was presented with a silver accolade and its Pink Edition Gin and Signature Gin won bronze prizes from the panel.

Sam Watson, commercial director at Burleighs Gin, was delighted with the latest award, saying: “The National Forest Gin is the first addition to the core range in two years, so for it to be well-received is fantastic.

“Both the ISWC and the Difford’s Guide ratings are highly regarded by the alcohol industry, but also by consumers passionate about gin.

“We hope the awards highlight The National Forest’s quality and flavour to our existing fans and new ones too, along with its purpose and environmentally-led approach.”
