Vital win for CLC 2nd XI keeps them firmly in promotion frame

WELLINGBOROUGH 1ST XI 1 COALVILLE & LOUGHBOROUGH CARILLON 2ND XI 3

In the reverse fixture, CLC prevailed 4-2 but it was a tough fixture with the quick and experienced Wellingborough side pushing all of the way. With the low temperatures and home field advantage, Wellingborough would be confident of stopping the CLC run which had yielded maximum points after the turn of the year. Some unavailability required a small reshuffle with goalkeeper Tom McCord and free scoring Ben Mugglestone both moving up from the 3rd XI to make their 2nd team debuts.

The game was every bit as competitive as was billed with both teams searching for the opening goal. It did come from CLC as debutant Mugglestone scored from a shot inside the circle. At this point CLC moved away from their hosts and began to control the game, without adding to their score.

However, it didn’t take long in the second half for the second goal to arrive, Mugglestone again applying the finishing touches. With the game now becoming stretched, further goals for CLC were there should they wish for them.

In the end, they would only add one more though arguably the goal of the game. Adam Lloyd exchanged sharp passes with numerous CLC players before driving to the base line before pulling the ball back for that man Mugglestone to be in the right place to complete his hat-trick, wrapping up both the game and also a very comfortable man of the match for his performance.

With time expiring, McCord who had enjoyed a quiet afternoon amongst the sticks, and no doubt in an effort to warm himself up, ventured a little too far out of his goal and was sin binned for playing the ball outside of the 23. However, time was against Wellingborough and they could only muster a lastminute consolation in the open net. A very useful three points for the 2nd XI which keeps them firmly in the hunt for promotion.
