POLICE have released the mugshot of a driver who killed another man after crashing into him while they were reportedly racing each other along a main road - and then fled the scene.

Catalin Barladeanu, 24, of Burder Street, Loughborough, left a barbecue at the same time as 35-year-old Oliver Dolici and the pair were travelling in convoy together just after midnight on Sunday, May 17, 2020.

Witnesses said the pair were racing each other along Ashby Road in the town when they collided, resulting in Mr Dolici’s BMW coming off the road.

His car then hit a lamppost, a wall, and five parked cars before coming to a rest on its roof, with debris from the collision damaging two homes.

Mr Dolici died at the scene, with Barladeanu, pictured, fleeing in his Mercedes before the emergency services arrived.

He later returned claiming he knew nothing of the incident until he was informed by another person.

However, an investigation showed that both of them had been travelling together along the A512 Ashby Road after leaving the barbecue.

Forensic investigation into the incident found that they may have been driving at speeds of up to 90mph on a 30mph road before the collision occurred.

As reported last week, Barladeanu was sentenced to three years and three months in prison for causing death by dangerous driving after being found guilty by a jury at Leicester Crown Court.

Once is released, he will face a two-year ban from driving and will be required to take an extended test.

Detective Constable Maggie Langton, speaking at the conclusion of the case, said: “The tragic circumstances of this collision show the devastation that drinking and speeding can have on individuals and their loved ones.

“A life was lost and another person now faces a term in prison for his actions. Not only did Barladeanu leave the scene of the collision but he then tried to cover his tracks by denying he was ever at the location or driving at the time.

“We are pleased that this case has now concluded and we hope this gives him the time now to reflect on his actions and the consequences.”
