SUTTON BONINGTON SHOW. After an enforced absence of two years because of covid restrictions, Sutton Bonington Show came back on to the local events calendar last year in fine form and again welcomed hundreds of people to what was as usual a super day out.

And at the annual show presentation evening held in the village hall chairman Chris Littledyke was able to announce a total of £5000 was being given out in donations to many local good causes.

In her report to the presentation evening, Chris said shortly after the corresponding event in 2020 they had held their AGM followed by a committee meeting , and little did they know then what the next two years would bring them.

She said after great consideration the shows of 2020 and 2021 had to be cancelled, in the interest of their exhibitors, entertainers and visitors along with the wider community of Sutton Bonington on whom they rely for support in so many ways, especially on show day itself.

Commenting on the 2022 show, Chris said the village Playgroup held a very successful, dance on the Friday night before show day, raising much needed funds, and with that event being a sell out a few days before it was held. “That was something that does not happen very often” said the chairman.

Her report went on: “We needed some lovely weather, and after the summer we had it was a great shame that as the Show weekend approached the weather changed, however the one or two short showers on the day did not spoil it.”

The show opened as usual with an Act of Worship organised by the Methodist Church, with among those attending being the Mayor of Rushcliffe. The opening event had one of the best attendances ever.

There was a disappointment on the day because the planned flyover by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight was not able to carry out its programme of performing several passes over the showground because of the weather conditions.

But despite that the show, said Christine, was a success. “The café and the raffle were very well supported, which gives funds a great boost, and thanks to everyone who bake beforehand, begs raffle prizes and help on the day”

Numbers in the horticulture show were less, with 580 compared to the 890 when the previous show was held in 2019 Said Christine: “I am sure the long hot summer, had something to do with that. Let’s hope we can improve this year.”

For the 2022 show the committee were unable to have the Fur and Feather show due to Avian flu and the Dexter show because of the absence of someone to run it.

Reporting on the 2023 show, the chairman said they had already booked the popular On the Edge motor cycle display ream and Van Beuren’s Victorian Theatre of Wonders, an entertainment show along with a circus workshop. There will also be a return of popular activities , like the climbing wall, the cave, and Birds of Prey. “The marquees, furniture, toilets etc are already booked and forms are ready to be sent to the exhibitors. and a flyover has been applied for,” added the chairman.

The show annual meeting will be taking place on Tuesday, February 21 in the Methodist school room. It will start at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome.

The chairman said the donation hand out from the 2022 show was not a huge amount. “We needed to replace what the last two years have cost us. However, that isn’t only what the show is for, it reunites people and give a very lovely days entertainment.”

In closing her report,

Christine said she wanted to thank everyone for attending the presentation event and to thank them for their efforts on Show Day last year, and hope they can count on their help and support for the show this year on September 3.

Donations from the 2022 event went to: The Word Project@SB £250, Sutton Bonington Lunch Club £200, Sutton Bonington Scouts £250, Hayward House £250, Mayor of Rushcliffe £250, L.N.R. Air Ambulance £500, Sutton Bonington Bowls Club £500, Sutton Bonington Methodist Church £500, Nottingham Breast Institute £1000.
