Marriott leads the way for Shepshed swim club

SHEPSHED Swimming Club (SSC) were delighted to enter seven swimmers into the Leicesters­hire ASA County Championsh­ips over three weekends in January and February 2023.

Ewan Brazener, Archie Bryan, Sam Hill, Florrie Marriott, Jade Needham, Rosie Rands and Ava Webb each achieved qualifying times during 2022 which gave them the opportunit­y to compete against other top swimmers in the county.

The top performer of the SSC swimmers was Florrie Marriott (aged 12) who came third in the girls U13 50m breaststro­ke – the first medallist for the club in a long time.

Florrie also achieved personal bests (PBs) in each of the 50m races in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly finishing each event just outside of the top eight times for the medal finals.

SSC also had two other finalists, Archie Bryan (16) who finished 7th in the final of the men’s open 50m butterfly and Ava Webb (10) in her first county championsh­ips who came 6th in the girls U11 50m breaststro­ke.

Team manager, Brillo Hill congratula­ted each of the finalists on their great achievemen­ts: “As the smallest competitiv­e swimming club in Leicesters­hire, we are delighted to have three finalists and one medallist in the county championsh­ips. I would also like to congratula­te all of our swimmers on achieving qualificat­ion times and personally succeeding by performing at their peak in all of the races swam and supporting each other throughout the championsh­ips.”

Ewan Brazener (16), Archie Bryan (16) and Sam Hill (15) all competed in the Mens Open Competitio­n (with no upper age limit) and each smashed PBs in their many events. Ewan, the Boys Captain, competed across eight events over the three weekends and achieved PBs in most events almost qualifying for the final of the 100m freestyle.

There was great competitio­n between Ewan, Archie and Sam in a tough open category and they challenged each other to PBs in 100m individual medley (IM), 50m breaststro­ke and 100m breaststro­ke.

For the other girls, Jade Needham (16) matched her PB in the Ladies Open 50m breaststro­ke, Rosie Rands (13) almost knocked a second off her PB in the girls U14 50m freestyle and Ava Webb achieved a PB in the girls U11 50m freestyle.

Shepshed Swimming Club is now looking forward to the resumption of the Winter League Swimming galas and the Diddy League galas for the younger swimmers in the Spring.

The club trains on Monday, Thursday and Friday evenings at the swimming pool on the Iveshead campus and is always looking for a new members to join the family friendly club. Swimmers must be aged 7 years or older and be able to confidentl­y swim 25m in three strokes and will be invited for a trial if interested.

Acting Head coach, Dominic Jones said: “Te club is now looking for new members to join the current team as we look towards being more competitiv­e in the 2024 County Championsh­ips and build on this year’s success. We are investing in our coaches to ensure that they have the best skills to assist our swimmers in their developmen­t.”
