LEICESTERSHIRE lays claim to the most expensive street in the East Midlands, with prices standing at about £1.6 million per property.

New data from Halifax, which has compiled a list of England and Wales’ most expensive streets, show Leicestershire and neighbouring Rutland claiming two of the top five spots.

The top street is Warren Hill, in Newtown Linford, close to Bradgate Park.

The Halifax data, which is compiled using latest Land Registry information, said a house there will set people back on average £1.615 million.

The average price narrowly edges out Melton Road in Stanton-in-the-Wolds near Nottingham (£1.6 million) to be the priciest street in the East Midlands.

Cour D’Honneur, in Oakham, came in fifth for the region, with an average value of just over £1.3 million.

East Midlands most expensive streets

1: Warren Hill, Newtown Linford, LE6, £1,615,000

2: Melton Road, Nottingham,

NG12, £1,600,000 3: Park Lane, Towcester, NN12, £1,348,000

4: Golf Lane, Northampton, NN6, £1,316,000

5: Cour D’Honneur, Oakham, LE15, £1,309,000

Warren Hill is a collection of homes situated along one side of the road, with the Hunt’s Hill car park for Bradgate Park at one end and the Roecliffe crossroads at the other.

The houses are all set back from the road, with little to give away to passing traffic the street’s expensive status.

However, the annual study makes clear that the sizable sum commanded there is a paltry figure in comparison to other streets elsewhere in the country.

Some will see people paying tens of millions of pounds for a house.

Compared to the West Midlands, these East Midlands prices are low. The priciest street there - Bakers Lane in Solihull - sets people back about £2.34 million.

The price variation is mirrored up and down the country.

Closest to Leicestershire’s priciest street is the North East, where prices in Durham’s Ramside Park cost £1.553 million, while in the North West, Altrincham’s Broadway has an average price of £3.184 million.

Unsurprisingly, the data reveals London has the most expensive street in England and Wales. Phillimore Gardens in Kensington has an average house price of £23.8 million. It edged out Grosvenor Square, Mayfair (£23.5 million) and Illchester Place, near Holland Park (£17.7 million).

Kim Kinnaird, mortgages director at Halifax, said: “For almost all of us, these homes and their eyewatering price tags are the stuff fantasy house hunts are made of.

“Unsurprisingly, London roads occupy the top 10 streets in the UK, and buying a home in London’s Phillimore Gardens could set you back a staggering £24 million on average.

“That said, the price of a prestigious address can differ hugely across the UK.

“Living on the most expensive street in the North East or East Midlands will cost something closer to £1.5 million.”

For almost all of us, these homes and their eye-watering price tags are the stuff of fantasy house hunts
