Care home residents join Big Garden Birdwatch

-

RESIDENTS at a care home in Quorn had their binoculars at the ready when they took part in this year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

An afternoon at Care UK’s Lonsdale Mews, in Farley Way, was spent observing the many feathered friends visiting the home.

Residents also made a trip to Queen’s Park, Loughborough, to take part in the world’s largest wildlife survey.

Every year, more than half a million people nationwide take part by counting the birds, as well as other garden species such as badgers and hedgehogs, that they spot in their garden in one hour. This allows the RSPB to monitor species population and trends year to year.

The care home team also invited James Wood, a resident’s family member, to deliver a talk on the rare birds he has spotted on his travels.

Residents have also been creating bird feeders to encourage visitors to the home’s garden.

Home Manager Toby Sturgess said: “Spending time outside and connecting with nature has great benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing, which is important for older people, and particularly for those living with dementia.

“Birdwatching is a peaceful activity, with vibrant colours and distinctive bird songs providing calming, sensory stimulation. It’s also a hobby which residents can enjoy from the comfort of an armchair, no matter what the weather, thanks to our carefully positioned feeders.

“We were delighted to be part of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch again this year and to be playing a part in this important national survey. It was great to learn more about our wildlife neighbours.”
