A Judge has told a man who pulled his pregnant girlfriend through a hedge, punched her in the face and drove his car at men who tried to help her to sort his life out.

Bryon Pratt, 22, was high on cocaine and over the alcohol driving limit when he launched the attack in Brookfield Road, Burbage.

The incident happened at 12.35pm on November 17.

At Leicester Crown Court, barrister Errol Ballantyne said his client was now off drugs and drink, having spent the past 99 days in prison, and deserved a second chance.

The court heard Pratt had previous convictions for selling cocaine, heroin, crack and other drugs.

But Judge Timothy Spencer KC gave Pratt a suspended prison sentence with no further punishment, telling him: “This is your chance. Don’t waste it. Sort your life out and don’t come back.”

Prosecutor Annabelle Lenton described the incident: “The defendant was seen attempting to pull (his girlfriend) over a bush and he swung a punch, hitting her.

“Men working nearby heard her screaming ‘He’s trying to kill me, he’s trying to run me over’. The defendant got into his vehicle and began to attempt to drive towards her.”

She said that after Pratt – who has never held a driving licence – saw the men trying to help his girlfriend he drove at them instead, “doing multiple handbrake turns” in the road.

Pratt, of Lewis Road, Loughborough, pleaded guilty to common assault, dangerous driving and drink-driving, as well as driving without a licence or any insurance.

Mr Ballantyne said Pratt’s new child was now six weeks old but he was no longer in a relationship with the mother.

Judge Spencer told Pratt: “I’m getting the impression of quite an immature young man. Whatever was going on does not justify you assaulting her. anyway, and particularly to a woman who was pregnant.

“Then you turned on the people who were only trying to help. If I thought you were actually trying to hit them you would be going away for a long time.

“But you’ve cleaned up, you’re ashamed and there is hope. You seem to have sorted your act out.”

Pratt was given a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years, and banned from driving for 12 months.
