SEEKING to make it four wins in a row, CLC 1st XI delivered arguably their best performance of the season in beating Sikh Union Coventry by 4-0.

With the away side sitting two points above them in the league table this was an opportunity to leap frog them and to move further up the table. A tough first meeting of the season in Coventry was added motivation for the team.

In the previous two games, CLC have fallen behind early but turned the tables this week as they scored with their first effort on goal. A quick break, turning defence into attack rapidly left Charlie Woodfield free to convert on the reverse stick from five yards out.

The game remained open with chances at both ends and CLC were disappointed not to go into half time further in front through a combination of loose finishing and fine goalkeeping.

The game in truth could have been level and only a fine goal line clearance from Alex Dennett kept the game level.

The first minutes of the second half put the game to bed as a contest. CLC were on fire and left their opposition for dead. First, Ruaidhri Maguire converted from close range after a shot was only partially cleared.

Three minutes later, Woodfield scored again with another closerange finish with the away side’s defenders chasing shadows. Completing the blitz, Maguire got his second with the goal of the game. Having turned the ball over in a deep position, it was played long to James Browbank who played a perfect ball through the yawning gap in the Sikh Union defence for Maguire to race on to before sliding the ball under the goalkeeper.

Having seen the game out with minimum fuss and a very welldeserved clean sheet for the defensive unit, the team move on to Rugby EW 2nd XI next week.

The men’s 2nd XI had another thumping win, this time against Warwick 4th XI, to keep them in prime position for promotion.

The final score was 5-0, the game notable for all five goals coming from penalty corners, James Whyte repeating his four goal haul for the second consecutive game, Alex Middleton grabbing the other and goalkeeper Euan Christie not having a touch the entire game.

The 3rd XI lost 5-2 away to Mansfield 2nd XI with youngsters Alex Vermaak and Alex Marriott on the scoresheet.

The 4th XI rounded out the day with a 1-1 draw against top half University of Warwick 4th XI, Robert Houghton scoring with an impressive first time finish.

The ladies 1st XI lost 3-1 to top of the table Market Harborough 1st XI, Anna Godwin with the goal. The ladies 2nd XI lost 7-0 to Leicester 1st XI, who are also top of the table. In the mixed section, the As lost 2-0 while the Kestrels drew 0-0.
