The results are in, and the people of Charnwood have decided who will represent them for the next four years.

The council has been held by the Conservatives for the past 16 years, but briefly had a Labour majority in the late ‘90s, followed by eight years when no party had overall control.

Candidates stood in 24 wards, four less than previously due to boundary changes made by the Government, but the total number of councillors remains at 52.

The Conservatives went into the election holding 37 seats, with the Labour Party forming the opposition with 12 councillors. The Green Party had one seat, and there were two independent councillors. Now, voters across the borough have decided that it’s time for a change with the Conservatives dropping to 23 seats, with former council leader Jonathan Morgan losing his seat. Labour increased their total number of seats to 20. The Green Party gained seven seats, bringing their total to eight, while there was a single independent winner.

Councillor Jewel Miah, the leader of the Labour Party in Charnwood, said this leaves the council under no overall control, and that Labour will be talking with other parties over the weekend to establish how the council will be run.

Coun Miah said: “It’s a fantastic result for Labour in Charnwood. The Conservatives are no longer in control and we’re looking forward to working with other parties to move our pledges forward.”

Former council leader Jonathan Morgan said: “It’s been a huge privilege to be a Charnwood Councillor for the past 12 years, and especially to lead the council over the past six years. I wish my successors well.”

Turnout for the election saw a high of 45.69% in Loughborough Nanpantan ward, and a low of 21.67% in Loughborough’s Storer ward.

THE National Lottery Awards are back for 2023, in search of the inspirational individuals and organisations who do amazing things with the help of National Lottery funding.

An incredible £62,684,323 of National Lottery funding went to projects in Loughborough in 2021/22 according to new figures released to mark the launch of the 2023 National Lottery Awards.

A total of 35 National Lottery grants were allocated in this period, providing crucial support to arts, sports, heritage and community organisations in Amber Valley.

The National Lottery Awards are the annual celebration of the ordinary people and projects who do extraordinary things with the help of National Lottery funding and attracted more than 1,300 entrants last year.

Again, this year, The National Lottery is looking to highlight the exceptional work of local heroes who have gone the extra mile to make a difference in their communities, especially during these challenging times.

Any person or group who has received National Lottery funding is eligible for nomination.

Jonathan Tuchner, from the National Lottery, said: “Since it was established in 1994, The National Lottery has continued to make a remarkable contribution to life in the UK.

“Thanks to National Lottery players, an incredible £47 billion has been raised for good causes, with £30 million supporting people and projects around the UK every single week.

“The National Lottery Awards seek to honour those who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the people around them. In difficult circumstances, this selfless dedication has never been more important, and we want to thank them and celebrate their incredible efforts.”
