Retired doctor raises over £6k by running marathon

-

74 year old Dr Guru Singh, a retired GP from Shepshed and Loughborough, successfully finished his London Marathon despite a calf strain.

His time was 6hr 24min. He ran for Brain Research UK a leading charity that facilitates ground breaking brain research, particularly in dementia, stroke, brain tumours and brain injuries.

Over 200 people, including family, friends and former patients sponsored him and to date well over £6,400 has been raised for this very worthwhile charity.

Dr Singh ran through the streets of London carrying some names on the back of his running vest to remember some that have passed away tragically and to support others who are currently fighting these cruel diseases.

He said: “Running this marathon for the fourth time was as amazing as running for the first time in 1976. The crowds, despite the wet weather, were out in force and cheering the runners. It was like running through a wall of sound every step of the way.

“There were many bands along the way and even a Morris dancing group. Small children with high fives were cheering and giving out jelly babies. Seeing Shepshed support at two spots was a massive boost.

“Exercising and staying active is one way of staying as healthy as possible as one ages. I can heartily recommend this. Just being outdoors in the fresh air is healthy. For those who can’t run for health reasons a simple brisk walk is good enough. Exercise also gives the incentive to improve dietary habits and boosts the immune system.

“I am very thankful to everyone who has donated and sponsored me for the marathon.“

Donations in cash or a cheque payable to Brain Research UK can also be left at Ryatt’s Optometrist in the Bull Ring, Shepshed and at Livio’s Italian Restaurant in The Hall Croft, Shepshed.

Dr Singh added: “Thanks to both these businesses for their help.”
