Blanket stitch

Blanket stitch makes a decorative border and can also be used as an outline stitch. This stitch can be used in appliqué to attach fabric shapes to the base material. Bring the needle up at 1, down at 2 and up at 3 with the thread under the needle. Gently pull the needle through to form a loop. The vertical stitches should be evenly spaced and of the same length. You may find it helps to draw two lines on the fabric as a guide. For a different effect, vary the length of the vertical stitches, alternating

between long and short ones.
