Another alternative finishing idea is to stitch a contra sting coloured fabric behind cut work. Use a plain block of colour or patterned fabric scraps, or even embroider your own fabric design that can be revealed by the open shapes.

Since the denim fabric doesn’t need reinforcing with stabiliser, you can use a heat-erasable pen to transfer the design freehand instead if preferred – note that this method might make it unsymmetrical.
