HOW TO WORK A BUTTONHOLE WHEEL

-

01

Start by bringing your needle up and out of the fabric on the outer edge of the circle. Take the needle back down through the fabric in the centre of your circle, creating a loop with your thread. Then, bring the needle back out of the fabric on the outer edge of the circle next to your first stitch, catching the loop of thread as you would with a basic Blanket Stitch.

02

Continue to work Blanket Stitch around the circle, taking the needle down in the centre and up at the edge. Focus on keeping the distance between the stitches on the outer edge of the wheel consistent. You can adjust the density of the spokes of the wheel by making the space between the stitches around the edge longer for larger gaps or shorter for a closed effect.

03

When you have circled back to the beginning of the wheel, secure your last stitch by bringing your needle up adjacent to where you started, still making sure you’re catching the loop. Then, instead of moving the stitch forward, take the needle back down through the fabric into the hole of your starting point to create a small catching stitch to hold it in place.

04

For a spiral Buttonhole Wheel, work from the outside of the shape in. Begin by working a loop on the inner edge and the come up through the loop on the outer edge. Continue, using the same method as a normal Buttonhole Wheel but with the inner edge acting as the centre until you reach the middle of the shape. Then, switch back to using the centre as you usually would.
