Long and Short Stitch

Work alternate long and short stitches for the first row, with the short stitches being half the length of the long ones. Bring the needle up at 1, down at 2, up at 3, down at 4 and so on. Subsequent rows are worked with the just long stitches, although the stitch length can be adjusted to suit the area being filled.
