The majority of this design is worked in a variant of Long and Short Stitch, where the area is stitched in stages of Straight Stitch using a series of short rows on top of each other to mimic the appearance of feathers (as shown in the images). We will refer to this throughout the project as staged Long and Short Stitch.

Refer to the yellow-coloured

stitch flow direction arrows on

the Embroidery Guide over the page to direct you with which

angle to work the different areas of the flamingo’s feathers. This doesn’t have to be exact, but the

arrows will give you an idea of the stitching angles to aim for

as they mirror the natural flow of feathers in real life.
