I love the unpredictable nature of older vehicles. I still say that a well-maintained vehicle shouldn’t break down, but it doesn’t mean that things can’t fail – as I found recently while driving my 88in.

Driving along a dual carriageway I noticed the speedo needle waving more erratically than normal before it bounced a couple of times then returned to zero. In days past I wouldn’t have minded because I run it on a limitedmileage policy, so keeping the miles off is a bonus – but these days I use it to keep a check on maintenance. Plus, I want the miles to increase to show I’m actually using it – I see people claiming that they ‘use it every day’, yet their MOT records say the vehicle covers sub-1000 miles a year, about what my little-used Land Rovers do.

Now I need to replace the cable – a horrible job on an overdrive-equipped Series. Wish me luck!
