These are for twirling off nuts and bolts once you’ve got them loosened. Okay, maybe not essential, but if you’re doing a lot of fixings they make life less tedious. At the bottom of the photo is a plain fixed Britool spinner with a ½in square top recess – very simple and easy to use. Above it is an old Britool ratcheting spinner (which has been converted from 3∕8in to ½in), with a lever for forwards and backwards. Modern versions of these are available from most tool stockists. For example, Laser 6372 (fixed drive, three different diameter heads) at about £17.50 (lasertools.co.uk). Or take a look at the Blue Spot ratcheting type, only £2.99.

VERDICT: Very useful to have around if you have a lot of fastenings to deal with.
