Now get out of that!
It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it – Team LRO gets stuck in to test 14 different methods of recovering a bogged-down Land Rover
How many different ways are there to get your Land Rover unstuck? Find out here
MARK SAVILLE ASSISTANT EDITOR We roped Mark into this test, but sadly he became so stuck in the mud it proved impossible to recover him. In fact, he’s still stuck. NEIL WATTERSON EDITOR As keen on getting caked in clay as he is on getting stuck into a box of cream cakes, Neil’s well used to mudlarking in off-road pursuits. JOHN PEARSON EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Likes taking in exotic vistas from the comfort of a roof tent, but has been in a few scrapes – now he’ll have to scrape all that mud off.
MARTIN DOMONEY WORKSHOP EDITOR More used to grubbing around in piles of rust and pools of oil underneath Land Rovers, but puts plenty of beef behind a shovel.
Winter is coming… and firm ground conditions become distant memories as the rain saturates the earth, turning it to mud. Even Land Rovers will struggle sometimes, but there are ways out. We’ve picked 14 different techniques you can employ if you find you’ve been turned into a stick-in-the-mud. Some of them are solutions for when you’re stuck alone, others apply when a second vehicle is to hand. And some are considerably easier and more successful than others. We headed to the Elephant’s Mudhole, an area of clay at the back of the Tixover off-road site where the LRO Adventure Club holds driving days (see page 184). During summer it’s as dry as a bone; in winter it’s so slippery you struggle to stand up, let alone gain traction. So it’s the ideal place for testing equipment, as well as for getting us properly filthy. The LRO 90 and Series III are our test subjects. Both have been fitted with all-terrain tyres that clog up instantly in the fine clay and offer zero traction – so outside assistance is essential. They also both have decent front and rear recovery points – a key consideration when you’re faced with a stuck vehicle. So grab a cuppa, get comfortable and have a read – see us get dirty so you don’t have to! And if you have other suggestions for us to try, let us know.
