DRUM/ELECTRIC WINCH

LRO (UK) - - Technique Muddy Recovery -

TESTED BY: MARTIN DOMONEY ● KIT REQUIRED: Winch, winch bumper, synthetic rope or cable, rigging gloves, winch sail ● TIME TAKEN: Five minutes ● COST: £838.80 (Goodwinch TDS with bumper for Defender) ● HOW EASY: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ● SUCCESS RATING: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ HOW IT’S DONE: Few other devices give the peace of mind of a quality, rated and serviced bumper-mounted winch – as long as you’ve got a sturdy tree or another Land Rover to use as an anchor point. Once the cable or rope has been spooled out and attached safely to the chosen anchor, it’s as easy as flicking the power isolator and standing back while winching in, observing the whole operation as you go. Steel cable should be treated with extreme caution and a blanket or sail should be placed over the line to damp the movement of the cable if it snaps. Synthetic rope isn’t quite as dangerous, but any winch recovery should be carried out with care – and only if you’re confident in using the equipment.
