Walter Sigel was an experience­d Junkers 87 Stuka pilot by the time the war began and he flew operationa­lly in Poland, France, and then during the Battle of Britain. He was awarded the Knights Cross when serving as commander of I./StG3. He then flew operationa­lly in the Mediterran­ean and North Africa before assigned to staff appointmen­ts in Norway. It was here, on 8 May 1944, during an inspection of Luftwaffe units that the aircraft he was flying in hit an air defence cable and he was killed in the crash.
