Poynton in peril

- MARTIN SAXON

VIVIO CHESHIRE CCL DIVISION TWO POYNTON ................ 179-7 BREDBURY ST M .... 181-3

POYNTON are now some 51 points from safety after their latest defeat, to Bredbury St Mark’s.

While trapdoor the relegation looms, Bred- bury’s victory moved them away from trouble.

Poynton started brightly with an opening stand of 73 between Paul Lombardi and Paul Gould. Gould departed for 30 and Lombardi eventually fell for 47, having batted very well but unfortunately holing out to a fielder off probably the worst ball he had faced.

Things were never quite so good for Poynton thereafter, but everyone made some sort of useful contribution.

Tony Berzins made 30 and there were valuable cameos from Dan Haresnape, Adam Williams and Simon Dunn.

Hassan Nasir finished with 5-41 and also did a great job in restricting the scoring in the final overs.

Poynton hoped they had scored enough runs to really put the pressure on their opponents, unfortunately with a depleted attack they were unable to contain Bredbury’s scoring right from the start.

Several large partner- ships saw them home inside 42 overs, as Chris Smith hit 17 boundaries on his way to 79, and Will Hayes completed the task with a composed 57 not out.

Five matches remain for Poynton, and a minimum of four wins from these are now surely needed to preserve their league status.
