JAILED: Raider who held up petrol station with axe

-

A RAIDER who held up a service station armed with an axe has been jailed.

Benn Davis burst into the Shell garage on Manchester Road, Tytherington, at around 5am.

It is understood that Davis was a regular visitor to the shop before the incident on Monday, December 22.

Police said he walked into the service station with the axe.

A worker managed to press a panic button, before Davis, of Abbey Road, Macclesfield, made off with a quantity of cigarettes and cash.

A responding police patrol found the robber in a road behind the service station, along with the holdall containing the axe and stolen loot soon afterwards, police said.

At a hearing at Chester Crown Court on Wednesday, January 21, Davis pleaded guilty to the robbery and to possessing the axe.

He was sentenced to a total of four years in prison for his crimes.

After the sentencing Steve Griffiths, head of Macclesfield police, said: “We got a call from the service station and were quickly on the scene.

“The patrol carried out a search of the area and the defendant had not got very far.

“He walked straight into their arms.

“After the officers stopped him because he matched the description of the robber, they searched him and found the bag that he was carrying contained the stolen goods.

“Violent crimes like this are thankfully very rare in Macclesfield but when it does happen the public know that we take it very seriously. He was a local lad from the area and this result shows that crime of any sort clearly doesn’t pay. The only thing an offender is likely to be left with is a lengthy sentence behind bars.”
